Coco Chanel introduced 'costume' jewelry to the world of fashion, using a variety of accessories such as earrings, necklaces, chains or pearls of several strands. In 1924, Coco introduced Chanel earrings - her first costume jewelry - which were a pair of pearl earrings, one black, one white.
