The Early Days - Guccio Gucci
The House of Gucci was founded in 1906 by Guccio Gucci in Florence, Italy. The shop was used as an outlet for selling leather goods to horsemen. In 1938, Gucci expanded and the first Gucci clothing retail shop was opened in Rome, which attracted international fanfare. Guccio was responsible for designing many of the company's most notable products. In 1947, Gucci introduced the bamboo handle handbag, which is still a company mainstay. During the 1950s, Gucci also developed the trademark striped webbing, which was derived from the saddle girth, and the suede moccasin with a metal bit.
Gucci Clothing - Rise To International Fame
After his death in 1953, his family was able to take the enormously successful Gucci clothing line to a position of international prominence by opening stores in Paris, Beverly Hills, London, Palm Beach and New York.
Gucci targeted the Far East for further expansion of the Gucci clothing line in the late 1960s, opening stores in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Korea. At that time, the company also developed its famous GG logo (Guccio Gucci's initials), the Flora silk scarf (worn prominently by Hollywood actress Grace Kelly), and the Jackie O shoulder bag, made famous by Jackie Kennedy (the wife of U.S. President John F. Kennedy) who was photographed with the Gucci shoulder bag.
In 1979, the Gucci accessories collection (GAC) was added to the Gucci clothing collection, intended to bolster the sales for the Gucci Parfums sector. GAC consisted of small accessories, such as cosmetic bags, lighters, and pens, which were priced at considerably lower points than the other items in the Gucci accessories and Gucci clothing catalogue.
The 80's turned out to be a challenging decade for the brand as disputes within the Gucci family led to bad business decisions.
Gucci Clothing Today
In 1993, the position of creative director went to Tom Ford, then just 32 years old. Under Ford's supervision, Gucci clothing gained recognition for being a brand for the wealthy and glamorous. During this time, Gucci became known for producing high quality products, including Gucci clothing, Gucci shoes men, luggage, jewelry, watches, fragrances, and eyeglasses. With the help of clever advertising, the label experienced an increase in sales.
"Tom Ford's vision of Gucci clothing is an all-out orgy of glamour", said a review in Vogue magazine.
